Laundromat + Sauna

Beth and I learned today that no one in Split, Croatia does laundry at noon -- for good reason.

The good news was that (1) our car rental return went smoothly (no crashes) -- I'm a bit on edge while driving a rental car in a foreign country particularly where stop signs are scarce and drivers are simply unruly; (2) there was a "salon" literally next door to the car rental place (took my Visa!) and even I need a haircut after three weeks; and (3) we found the "praonica" (laundromat - thank God Google translation helped us spot it along the street) just up the street from our hotel and it was quite clean, possibly due to the Pentagon-like security (buzz in door lock, with full video surveillance inside and out).  And, it was empty...

The bad news: it was over 80 degrees (that's 27 for the Euro friends) and over 50 percent humidity inside!!  When I felt drops of sweat hitting my bare feet (I was only wearing my bathing suit (seriously) by the end, that locked this in as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Dante's Inferno would be a meat locker compared to this laundromat.  And, I actually left the premises a couple times to run errands ("I'll check out the church I saw down the road") -- the pleather couch Beth sat on the whole time (free wifi is like a drug to my travel mates! Picture Madelyn and Charlie crouching in the hallway with phone/iTouch cause "that's the only place we can get connection") had a patch of sweat and sunscreen marking her spot when she uprooted an hour later!

The kids had a blast jumping off rocks into the Adriatic Sea while Beth and I took care of a few final necessities before linking with our all-inclusive (someone else tell my family what we're doing each day) tour along the Dalmatian coast. Car returned, check, haircut, check, morning run (family just realized the "bike" tour involves significant distances, so need to be in shape), huge free hotel breakfast, check, kids happy/ swimming, check, laundry, check -- Bonus: lost three pounds each merely sweating!

This evening we'll hit mass. Time to give thanks for such treasures, kindness of random strangers, happiness and love. Cheers -- hope your laundry is cool and dry.

Photo tip: zoom in to see profuse sweat on my brow and/or temp/ humidity readings.
